Texas Record AlligatorJustin Wells of Lufkin, Tom Bass of Dallas, Jarrett Hanus of Spring and Ryan Haltom of Houston set baits to catch an alligator by hook and line. They had scouted the area and knew there was a big alligator lurking about the area where they set their bait. When they returned to check on the bait, they found they had hooked a gator. But which one?

As reported in the Lufkin Daily News:

“We’d gotten word back in the spring time that there was a big gator out there,” said Haltom, a wildlife biologist and land management consultant, “so me and Tommy had gone out there several times and scouted and seen quite a bit of gator activity and videotapes of gators.”
Ranch manager Larry Denson had spotted the big gator, prompting them to get tags for the season, and Thursday night was just “kind of a last-minute deal before the season was over,” Haltom said.
Using the hook-and-line method, the group anchored a rope to a tree, left enough rope so the gator could run with it, and hung a 14-ought treble hook about a foot above the water with their own “secret recipe of chicken and some other stuff.”
“We can’t let too many secrets out of the bag,” Haltom said.

Returning on Friday to check the bait, they assumed a gator had taken the bait, run off and probably drowned.

“He drowned himself,” Wells said. “We believe he just dove underneath the water and got tangled up in a stump, and gators have to come up for air every 15 minutes, so we were pretty sure he was dead, but we still weren’t sure.”
“Once we figured out he was dead and he wasn’t going to get us,” Haltom said, “we started diving down and feeling on him and we realized he was big. We could stand on top of him and we were head and shoulders above the water. That’s when we knew he had to be a big guy.
“The scales kind of change. On his belly there’s big, slick scales, or tiles, and as you get toward their mouth it gets into some softer leather, and we got to feeling around and thought, ‘OK, this is his mouth.’ But when we got to tying him up, we realized it wasn’t his mouth — it was his leg.”

Discovering a truck and a rope (400-pound test that broke) wasn’t going to help, they eventually got it out of the water with a tractor and chains.

The gator measured 13 feet, 10 1/2 inches and weighed 880 pounds. They think it has the potential to be a Texas state hook and line record. They are waiting to see.

The men plan to have the gator mounted and donated to a museum or some such thing.

According to the Social Media Club blog there are nine get togethers organised before the end of the month. All of them are in American cities, plus there is one other taking place right here in the Isle of Man.

The Isle of Man Social Media Club meets the Third Thursday of each month and that means next week, 21 August, we’ll be meeting for lunch at Paparazzi on the Douglas Promenade. 12.30 -14.00. Everyone with an interested in blogging, Facebook, podcasts, Twitter, etc are welcome.

The Third Thursday initiative has four main aims.

We want to share knowledge and experience. Each of us has a different perspective on social media; we’ve learned different things. Our meet up is a great way to exchange ideas and information and have a nice social lunch at the same time.

We want to expand the use and understanding of social media generally. That’s why anyone who is curious about online communication and networks is welcome, whether you’re interested because your kids are on MySpace or your employees are congregating on Facebook, or you want to find out how to blog your travels.

We want to promote ethical behaviour online. Issues such as privacy, plagarism, fraud, reputation, freedom of speech, libel and others all need to be explored and discussed. We’d like to do our part in raising standards.

We want to encourage adoption of industry standards. By raising awareness of Creative Commons, data protection, best practice we’ll improve the credibility of social media and make the blogosphere a safer place.

But most of all these meet ups are just a great way to meet people who share your hobbies and interests. You’ll definitely learn something new. You get to actually meet people you’ve corresponded with online. You’ll make new contacts too.

Please come! Tweet me if you can make it. Or even use email or the phone if you like :-)

What does that mean. SEO are I am sure you are aware means Search Engine Optimisation. COD is not used as much as it used to be but of course means Cash on Delivery.

I’ve been looking at other SEO services and have read with interest the way SEO services are offered with vague promises but all require money up front.

Our SEO services will always be COR “cash on results”. SEO companies often claim that they can get you listed first on Google. This is not always realistic as their will always be a competitor and SEO firm trying to push you off the No1 spot.

So if you want SEO COR please make contact asap.

Tim O’Reilly wonders (out-loud) whether linking to yourself is the future of the web — I hope not. He ends the post with two guidelines worth thinking through:

    1. Ensure that no more than 50% of the links on any page are to yourself. (Even this number may be too high.)
    2. Ensure that the pages you create at those destinations are truly more valuable to your readers than any other external link you might provide.

Most techies reading this blog understand the traffic potential of good search engine optimization, but I’d urge everyone not to place SEO ahead of the the user experience. You should certainly be thinking about the search engines as you write, but in the end, your audience is the user — not Google. Yes, you certainly might increase your SEO traffic by continually linking to yourself, but is it really worth alienating your current audience? I agree with Joe — brand traffic is more valuable in the long run. Building brand traffic is not easy and will be even more difficult if your complete focus is building a good experience for Google. Regardless of how good your site’s content is, I’d be very skeptical that your website is the most relevant source of information about everything you mention on your website/blog.

As I said above, I certainly hope linking to yourself is not the future of the internet. I firmly believe that users gravitate towards sites that put their best interests first (I know I do), so those who are excessively linking to themselves are shooting themselves in the foot in my mind. Remember, linking out is good.

    Ok, seriously — happy linking!!
