It seems that a number of people can only change their environmental footprint at the charge of the federal government and corporate advertising. I am whitnessing increasingly more people who are ‘going green’, which seems to be exclusivly inspired by the media. When a researcher looks into environmentalism, it becomes obvious that this new environmental mindset is unbelieveably narrow and is in part only a selling ploy of big business who are determined to disrupt unmistakably altruistic companies such as Fair Trade and the many small environmental start-ups.As someone who has attempted to be a blip on the environmental damage radar – I recycle as much as it is possible in my area, I refuse to drive and buy next to no physical products – I find this new sensation of environmentalism spurious and narrow minded.

It has been possible for many years to power your car with water right now or you can take a trip to Brazil where many cars run on ethanol. To those of you who are willing to explore such technologies, it will become apparent that true alternatives to power demand have been accessible for many years. It is these same multi-national corporations that have quashed the realization of real alternate power in our times, not in 2040. One of the racketeer of this new idealogy are the energy corporations who are trying to sell a new green front by their research into reserve power, which they will sell us once natural resources are no longer viable.

It is not just our power needs that can be replaced by truly green alternatives, but our construction materials and product packing can become environmentally amicable today.

Not long ago I found this great green home website, which will give you an idea of some of the alternatives that are available. The site is recurringly refreshed with new posts and news from the green scene. The articles examine a great numer of subjects, such as green home buildings and green home designs.

Open Source 1-Wire discussion http://www.dallasnn.com/open-source-1-wire-discussion http://www.dallasnn.com/open-source-1-wire-discussion#comments Mon, 01 Dec 2008 02:12:05 +0000 admin http://dallasnn.com/open-source-1-wire-discussion Another post in English, just to please the larger audience.

I just finished an interesting discussion with another developer, about starting an Open Source 1-Wire project to convert the existing Java 1-Wire classes provided by Dallas/Maxim to C#. We’ll see what this ends in, sounds promising.

Update: After having a look at the code that was provided (which is based on the alpha release of the “Pure C#”-code by Dallas), I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to stick to my own 1-Wire library for the time being. Although using the code-base from Dallas might give some benefits - it is the official C# library after all - I also see benefits of using my own implementation. The biggest advantage to use their code-base is obviously the device containers that comes with it; I’ll have to implement those I need in my library. On the other hand, there are very few devices for which I need support; it’s just temperature sensors (Family 0×10), switches (0×05) and a third party LCD driver.

Support for temperature sensors are already implemented and judging by the data sheet for DS2405, implementing support for that switch doesn’t look very hard. The same goes for the LCD driver. So, until someone convinces me otherwise, I will continue to develop my own library.

Oh, for those who wonders: I’ve not decided if I shall release my library as Open Source or not yet. I’m still thinking about it.

Who Was Going To Take Flacco? http://www.dallasnn.com/who-was-going-to-take-flacco http://www.dallasnn.com/who-was-going-to-take-flacco#comments Sun, 30 Nov 2008 02:11:44 +0000 admin http://dallasnn.com/who-was-going-to-take-flacco I’m mystified. Maybe they had intel that another team was getting ready to move up?

Congrats Philly fans, you get Otah. My gut feeling was that Baltimore was moving up to snag Otah right under Philly’s nose. Mike Jenkins could fall into Tampa’s lap. Merling into Washington’s. I have no idea who to project for Dallas, Pittsburgh, and Tennessee.
Mendenhall in Dallas would be sick. We’re also getting into the WR strike zone.

The suspense is killing me!

A Few Images from A-KON http://www.dallasnn.com/a-few-images-from-a-kon http://www.dallasnn.com/a-few-images-from-a-kon#comments Sat, 29 Nov 2008 11:11:07 +0000 admin http://dallasnn.com/a-few-images-from-a-kon Sorry, I didn’t post these images until now (even though I had promised to post them last week). First I miss placed my camera. It somehow managed to fall under my car seat and I probably wouldn’t have even looked there had I not cleaned it this weekend. Then once I found my camera I lost the USB cable which enabled me to move the pics from my camera to my PC (yeah, I know I lose or rather misplace a lot of stuff). So, here are just a few images from my A-KON visit which was only week ago.

Oh, I forgot to mention that they also had a dealers room where you can by also sorts of interesting and cool anime & manga gear. It was a large room featuring many different vendors but the prices for these items were ridiculous! Honestly, $7.50 for an Ichigo chibi key chain and an Abel key chain. No way! You can save $3.00 buy shopping here at AnimeJackpot and that doesn’t take in the 10% discount you can also apply to any purchase when you sign up for our VIP newsletter. So, needless to say I did not purchase any character goods. Things were a little overpriced for my blood and it appeared it wasn’t only my blood that thought the prices where over the top. I ended up leaving with a few free posters and small promotional items.

But anyway, here are a few pictures and you’ll hear from me soon,
T.A.G.

Texas, News: Roger Owen, a Convicted Felon http://www.dallasnn.com/texas-news-roger-owen-a-convicted-felon http://www.dallasnn.com/texas-news-roger-owen-a-convicted-felon#comments Sat, 29 Nov 2008 10:11:04 +0000 admin http://dallasnn.com/texas-news-roger-owen-a-convicted-felon Hot on the tail of the Open Letter to Roger Owen, Vince Leibowitz of Capitol Annex received an anonymous tip that Owen is a convicted felon in the State of Flordia. Leibowitz quickly did his homework and came up with this article from the St. Petersburg Times, listing Owen’s offenses.

It turns out that Owen made failed runs for office in Florida in 1982 and 1984. In 2003, Owen tried again, only to find out that he could not run due to a felony conviction for burglary. The newspaper spells it all out:

Florida remains among the seven states in the nation where ex-felons are denied the right to vote even though their sentence is served. And in the 1980s, Owen spent seven months in a Florida prison for violating probation that stemmed from a burglary charge.

Ironically, when Owen ran in 1982 and ‘84, his main platform was, “taking a jab at the Florida Bar Association, he said, because he believed there was little way for citizens to fight against lawyers’ corruption.”

The one to make you laugh all the way home? “[Owen] proposed creating an elected commission to review charges of unethical practice.” Then again, at the time, Owen had yet to commit his crimes.

His crimes? Burglary, probation violations:

He is vague about details of his 1985 arrest, saying that the incident occurred at the home of a woman he loved and that he was, at worst, trespassing.

Prosecutors charged him with burglary, a felony for which adjudication was withheld. Later, Owen intentionally violated his probation, he said, preferring to finish his time quickly in prison rather than having probation officers breathing down his neck for longer. (Emphasis, mine)

Oh, but it doesn’t end, there, folks. It gets better. Not only did he violate probation, once, but…

…Florida Department of Law Enforcement records show Owen was convicted twice for violating his probation in 1987, though they don’t explain what he did. (Emphasis, mine)

Amazingly, it doesn’t end, there. It goes all the way back to 1971:

FDLE records indicate a lengthier arrest history than Owen admits to. It lists at least four convictions dating back to 1971, including misdemeanor convictions on charges of contempt of court and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, as well as several other arrests in which adjudication was either withheld or the charge dismissed. (all emphasis, mine)

The hard-hitting, anti-corruption politico was convicted at least four times, dating back to 1971. First for contempt of court - a relatively minor infraction. Secondly, however, he was convicted for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Amazingly, Owen attempts to deny it:

…Owen said some of those arrests likely belonged to a troublesome relative who had used his name in the past. However, Owen said the records matched his personal information, including his birth date and Social Security number. (emphasis, mine)

This amuses the hell out of me. Not because Owen “feels he has paid his dues.” After all, he actually has. It amuses me because the man fighting on an anti-corruption ticket went to jail for probation violation, and has charges against him, from the past, of contempt of court, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor - of all things. Honestly, I’m not so sure I want someone like that representing me.

Some of you may be wondering how this has bearing on Texas. Simple, Owen is making a bid for Texas-1, in November. Now, I’m not going to let a man’s past dictate his future. However, in combining his recent rhetoric and actions, with his past (which certainly plays a role in alluding to character), I’m not too thrilled with Owen.

Whether or not I support Owen will be a fairly tough decision. At this point, I’m most definately at a “wait and see” attitude.

Your thoughts?

Texas Means ‘Friendship’ http://www.dallasnn.com/texas-means-friendship http://www.dallasnn.com/texas-means-friendship#comments Sat, 29 Nov 2008 05:11:11 +0000 admin http://dallasnn.com/texas-means-friendship Can’t say this surprises me. We are nothing here if not overly polite.

FORTH WORTH, TX — A Family Dollar clerk in Forth Worth, Texas was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after police said he used a crowbar to club a deaf customer. Cody Goodnight, 30, has been deaf since before the age of 2 and uses sign language to communicate.

I had no idea that they carried crowbars at Family Dollar. I now know where to go for all of my crowbar needs.

When Goodnight tried to pay for two bottles of Sprite with a $5 bill he was assaulted by the store clerk. Investigators said the clerk, 20-year-old Ricky Young told them he thought Goodnight was being rude by not talking to him and hit him in the head with a crowbar.

First, nice job by the reporter to flesh out all the details. I spent 20 minutes re-reading the above paragraph to try and determine exactly why it’s important for us to know that he used a $5 bill. Turns out it’s not. Also, how much do you think The Coca Cola Company paid for the product placement in the deaf guy/crowbar story. I’m guessing low 5 figures. And yeah, the fact that the guy’s name is Goodnight is hilarious. It’s just too easy; I’m not going to make that joke.

However, I will point out that hey, at least Goodnight wasn’t knocked deaf. So hey, glass half full…

Goodnight said he is still scared to return to the store or any other place alone. The clerk faces years in prison if convicted, authorities said.

He’ll eventually get to the point where he’ll go to libraries and tractor pulls (remember, Texas) again, but I think it’s safe to say that here and here are out.

A spokesman for Family Dollar said the store is conducting its own internal investigation into the incident.

Uh oh, the Family Dollar investigators are on it! I hear they’ve almost found Hoffa something like 6 times! That guy is fucked.

NBA: (Video) Where Amazing Happens: Dirk Nowitzki http://www.dallasnn.com/nba-video-where-amazing-happens-dirk-nowitzki http://www.dallasnn.com/nba-video-where-amazing-happens-dirk-nowitzki#comments Thu, 13 Nov 2008 17:05:21 +0000 admin http://dallasnn.com/nba-video-where-amazing-happens-dirk-nowitzki Why is this video of the NBA pushing their ad campaign “Where Amazing Happens”, this time with everyone’s favorite German - Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki - posted? For two reasons: 1) Dirk is less awkward looking as a boy and 2) the boy band haircuts of Dirk and Steve Nash. Seriously, Nash really liked the frosted tip look didn’t he. Also, the NBA couldn’t find a better picture then the one of Dirk at the 22 second spot? He has his tongue out and looks like his pants are hiked up over his stomach. When a friend of mine sent this video to me I first thought it was a joke.

Tucker, Christensen, Marleau, Canadiens, Flames, Huet, Blue Jackets, Ruutu, and Miller http://www.dallasnn.com/tucker-christensen-marleau-canadiens-flames-huet-blue-jackets-ruutu-and-miller http://www.dallasnn.com/tucker-christensen-marleau-canadiens-flames-huet-blue-jackets-ruutu-and-miller#comments Mon, 10 Nov 2008 10:11:35 +0000 admin http://dallasnn.com/tucker-christensen-marleau-canadiens-flames-huet-blue-jackets-ruutu-and-miller Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun suggests that if the Toronto Maple Leafs will “seriously” consider buying out forward Darcy Tucker because it would only cost the team $1 million per season for the next six seasons.

The Boston Globe’s Kevin Paul Dupont reports that Atlanta Thrashers forward Erik Christensen wanted out of Pittsburgh because he wasn’t getting enough playing time.

Dupont also suggests that the Boston Bruins should give goalie Tim Thomas a one-year contract extension, while signing Glen Metropolit to a two-year extension due to their strong performances this season.

Lastly from Dupont, he reports that the San Jose Sharks tried hard to deal struggling forward Patrick Marleau before the February 26 trade deadline, but could not find any takers.

According to Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, Marleau has a “no-movement” clause kicks in on July 1, so he will be even more difficult to deal. That’s why the Sharks wanted to part ways with him now.

Garrioch also reports that the Montreal Canadiens contacted the Chicago Blackhawks to inquire about the availability of forward Martin Havlat, but could not put a deal together. Speculation is that Havlat may be moved during the off-season.

Meanwhile, the Canadiens were also working on trading pending unrestricted free agent forward Michael Ryder to the Calgary Flames for Alex Tanguay. It’s believed that the deal fell through when Flames GM Darryl Sutter decided not trade Tanguay.

Tanguay, who agreed to waive his no-trade clause, is said to be disappointed he was not moved.

Look for the Washington Capitals to attempt and re-sign pending UFA goalie Cristobal Huet, says Garrioch. If they’re successful, longtime Capitals netminder and pending UFA Olaf Kolzig could find himself playing for another team.

Did the Columbus Blue Jackets trade pending UFA defenseman Adam Foote to the Colorado Avalanche over $500,000? Yes, according to Garrioch.

The Blue Jackets also lost out on Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brad Richards, even though they made a decent offer of forwards Gilbert Brule and Dan Fritsche along with a prospect.

So, which teams tried to acquire Blackhawks forward Tuomo Ruutu before the was dealt to the Carolina Hurricanes? Garrioch claims it was the Bruins, Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins.

Negotiations between the Buffalo Sabres and goalie Ryan Miller aren’t going well, as Miller doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to sign a contract extension with the Sabres. This leaves Garrioch to speculate that he’ll take off as a UFA after the 2008-09 season.
